The Southeast Law Enforcement Handgun Classic

The four gentlemen visible in this photo are the ones responsible for the creation, organization and deployment of the world’s latest handgun shoot-off challenge for members of law enforcement from all across the nation. The Southeast Law Enforcement Handgun Classic is a supremely constructed event meant to challenge, test and improve handgun management skills for the men and women whom keep us safe throughout the day and when we’re most vulnerable, at night.

Why Was this event created?

I’m pulling from memory and interview footage when I speak on their behalf. This event was created to provide a challenging and yet relaxed atmosphere where LEO (Law Enforcement Officers) could let their guard down and practice the skills that directly affects the safety of themselves and those whom they protect—their families, our families and the ones we call friends. In traditional law enforcement training, dynamic scenarios like the ones competitors faced at this event don’t typically exist. The Southeast Law Enforcement Handgun stages are designed to challenge a shooters skillset in various scenarios that emulate real life situations.

What can you expect when shooting at The Southeast Law Enforcement Classic?

A whole hell of a lot of fun–duh.

Brian Townsend, who serves as the match director and stage designer puts weeks of effort into carefully laying out the stages to make sure each shooter not only has fun, but is challenged to perform in various shooting scenarios. Competitors in the 2026 event were tasked with shooting small, large, stationary and moving targets across ten stages. Not only was there a variance in target size, type and location; each location also forced competitors to stand, crouch, lean, switch handguns, reload and operate doors while racing against the shot timer. Each competitor that shoots this event walks away with a heap of experience, an awareness check and a realistic data point as to where they stand as a shooter.

Where is the Event held?

The Southeast Law Enforcement Handgun Classic is held in the Scenic City, otherwise known as Oak Ridge, Tennessee. More specifically at the Oak Ridge Sportsman’s Association’s facility (ORSA). This location was chosen for the event as its the home base for event leadership. Not only that, it is a large location capable of hosting ten plus stages for competitors to humbly battle it out.

When does this event take place?

Thus far, each event has been held in the third or fourth week of May. If you’re looking to get signed up, you’ll need to follow them on (Instagram) to keep in the loop. Cody Hudson, who heads up social media, is extremely active on the platform. Once event details are released, that information will be shared on Instagram for the time being, until a website is built for the organization. According to what I know, the sign up details will most likely be shared in October each year.

Awards and Ceremonies

For 2026, there were a various amount of sponsors which included some names you may or may not be familiar with. Each of their sponsors graciously stepped up to the plate and provided a vast amount of awards from challenge coins to optics and full-on gun vouchers. Smith & Wesson jumped on board for the 2026 year and sponsored a challenge affectionately known as “The Duel.” The top 32 shooters went head to head until only the last man was left standing which was a great feature to spectate.

Who’d we see this year? To name a few.

Vortex
Smith & Wesson
Staccato
